Designing sampling protocols for plant-pollinator interactions - timing, meteorology, flowering variations and failed captures matter

چکیده
Plant-pollinator interactions are key components of ecosystem functioning and therefore increasingly studied. Of all the approaches used to estimate these interactions, capture pollinators along transects is a widely recognized method. However, specific choices sampling design can strongly influence observations insect visits bias ecological interpretations. Yet, there no agreement on best transect design. Sampling intensity (number length transects) an important element choices, but not only one. Here we investigate three other facets protocol that commonly arise when designing pollination transects: (i) conditions may interact with variables interest or observations, (ii) measurement floral availability frequency, (iii) management insects observed captured. We quantified importance using large dataset 720 plant-pollinator in protected wet meadows France. Our results demonstrate need cover wide range temporal meteorological for each site, repeat assessment plot attractiveness (a major covariate, usually simply derived from one-off vegetation surveys). In addition, show analyses visitation density among groups, failed captures should be discarded incorporated into analyses. Overall, this research identifies highlights their our understanding interactions.

Ecology and evolution of plant-pollinator interactions.
BACKGROUND Some of the most exciting advances in pollination biology have resulted from interdisciplinary research combining ecological and evolutionary perspectives. For example, these two approaches have been essential for understanding the functional ecology of floral traits, the dynamics of pollen transport, competition for pollinator services, and patterns of specialization and generalizat...

متن کاملStudying plant–pollinator interactions facing climate change and changing environments1
Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for successful plant reproduction in both natural and agricultural systems. These interactions are negatively impacted by recent large-scale alterations of the environments, particularly climate change. The responses of plants and pollinators to changing abiotic conditions that vary seasonally and geographically are often uncoordinated, potentially le...
متن کاملUsing metabarcoding to reveal and quantify plant-pollinator interactions
Given the ongoing decline of both pollinators and plants, it is crucial to implement effective methods to describe complex pollination networks across time and space in a comprehensive and high-throughput way. Here we tested if metabarcoding may circumvent the limits of conventional methodologies in detecting and quantifying plant-pollinator interactions. Metabarcoding experiments on pollen DNA...
